The Grey Album is an album by Danger Mouse, released in 2004. It uses an a cappella version of rapper Jay-Z's The Black Album and couples it with instrumentals created from a multitude of unauthorized samples from The Beatles (more commonly known as The White Album). The Grey Album gained notoriety due to the response by EMI in attempting to halt its distribution.

This is a short test run of a Timothy Leary interview intertwined with a simple loop background called,at this point, LEARY LOOPDLU. This recording was produced in 2006. At the time I was trying to get a feel for the intended piece.

Freelance writer C.D. Stelzer conducted a phone interview of Leary in the late 80's. The interview runs about 40 minutes so there's a lot more than what's heard on this initial take.

Maybe someday I'll get back to it, but for now here's a taste.

Rounder to release Woody Guthrie remasters, just in time for new depression

On Aug. 25, Burlington-based Rounder Records and the Woody Guthrie Archives will release "My Dusty Roads," a four-CD set of 54 Woody Guthrie recordings from the 1940s that have been remastered from the original metal masters recorded by Herbert Harris and Moses Asch. The recordings of songs including "This Land Is Your Land" and "Pretty Boy Floyd," six previously unreleased, were stashed in a Brooklyn basement for decades before they were rescued by reissue co-producer Michael Creamer, who heard about them through his cousin, Rounder says. A half-dozen of the tracks were used in the American Masters documentary "Woody Guthrie: Ain't Got No Home." "Hear these recordings for the first time and your jaw will drop, the sound is so clean and crisp that you'll hear the songs in ways you never have before," documentary producer Peter Frumkin says in the Rounder announcement.

The box set will also include a 68-page full color book, written by Guthrie historian Ed Cray and Rounder’s Bill Nowlin. The archives contributed previously unpublished photos, as well as artwork and illuminated lyric sheets by Guthrie himself. Also included are facsimiles of Guthrie's business card, a postcard sent from Florida to his wife, and a booking card from the 1940s. The entire package comes in a replica 1940s-style vintage suitcase, complete with handles and latches, in case you feel like jumping a freight with it. List price for the set is $79.

The 10-second recording of a singer crooning the folk song “Au Clair de la Lune” was discovered earlier this month in an archive in Paris by a group of American audio historians. It was made, the researchers say, on April 9, 1860, on a phonautograph, a machine designed to record sounds visually, not to play them back. But the phonautograph recording, or phonautogram, was made playable — converted from squiggles on paper to sound — by scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif.

Levon Helm, drummer and singer for The Band, is releasing a new solo album, his first in 25 years. Dirt Farmer, coming out October 30th on Vanguard Records, is very much a folk music album. Instrumental backing and production is by Larry Campbell, a tremendous musician and alum of Bob Dylan's touring (and Love and Theft) band. Amy Helm, Levon's daughter and singer with the group Ollabelle, contributes backing vocals. Levon is an unbelievably talented musician, but what makes this album all the more miraculous is that he has recently triumphed in a bout with throat cancer, a disease which silenced his famous voice and could have stolen it away forever. Luckily for us, it has not. Recently in Salon, noted correspondent Sidney Blumenthal wrote that the film 'No End In Sight' "has the White House spooked" by the prospect of former high level officials like Colin Powell being inspired by the insiders in the film to speak out against the shortsightedness of the disastrous Iraq policy, destroying the last vestiges of the administration's credibility.

Time Magazine has called the film "Without a doubt the most important film you are likely to see this year," and it is possibly the best reviewed film of the entire year, as you can see from the selection of critic quotes below.

Uncle Dave Macon (October 7, 1870 - March 22, 1952), also known as "The Dixie Dewdrop", was an American farmer, banjo player, singer, songwriter and comedian.

Born David Harrison Macon in Smartt Station, Tennessee, Macon farmed for many years, playing the banjo as a hobby. At age fifty, he joined a vaudeville touring company, putting on a comedy show and playing old-time music accompanying himself on banjo. Immediately popular, within a few years he was in New York City making country phonograph records that became almost instant bestsellers, and at age 56 he was one of the first stars of the Grand Ole Opry on WSM radio in Nashville. Macon continued to perform until his passing in 1952 at age 81 in Readyville, Tennessee. He was inducted posthumously into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1966.

This recording, made in 1889 preserves a unique occasion, a dinner party given by Robert Browning's friend the artist Rudolf Lehmann. Colonel Gouraud had brought with him a phonograph and each of the guests was invited to speak into it. Initially reluctant, Browning eventually relents and can be heard reciting from his poem 'How They Brought the Good News from Ghent to Aix'. Unfortunately, he forgets the words after a few lines, tries again and then gives up, but can be heard expressing his astonishment at this "wonderful invention".

This intriguing sound installation reveals the myriad of noises hidden within the Millennium Bridge. A network of vibration sensors have been placed within the bridge turning it into a vast stringed instrument which plays an ever-changing musical composition based on it's surrounding environment.

The noise created by pedestrians passing overhead, the wind, bicycles and the architectural elements which make up the bridge have been transformed into a sound installation which can be heard simultaneously in Tate Modern's Turbine Hall and also at Southwark Underground station.
